What is a Chronic Exhaustive Condition?

Myalgic Encephalopathy or Encephalomyelitis; Chronic Fatigue Syndrome; Long Covid or PASC - Post-Acute Sequelae of Covid-19; PVF, Post Viral Fatigue are some of the diagnosis names

What is a Chronic Exhaustive Condition?: List

For decades the UK has stated that around 260,000 people suffer from ME/CFS, however, this number is accepted as a gross underestimate of the real number of sufferers, as surveys have discovered the majority of sufferers do not have a formal diagnosis. It also omits those suffering with other chronic exhaustive conditions such as PVFS (post Viral Fatigue Syndrome), CFIDS (Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction), SEID (Systemic Exertion Intolerance Disease), PASC (Pose Acute Squalae of Covid-19) to name a few.

The majority of sufferers are female, but men are on the increase. Onset is most common between the ages of 20 and 40 years old, but an increasing number of teens are now being identified.

It is not just being really tired and it is most certainly not laziness. It produces a state of debilitating exhaustion that is not relieved by rest. It most commonly includes sleep disturbance, either sleeping all the time or insomnia (or alternating between the two). It affects every system in the body, both mental and physical (see Common Symptoms list here).

It not only affects every area of the sufferers life, but can be catastrophic for their relationships, both family and friends. The PACE Trial, 2012, showed over 85% of sufferers experience loss of employment.

Many support groups paint a bleak picture of having to learn to live with the difficulties, even if that means living the rest of your life in silence and darkness, unable to cope with sound, light, movement, touch... suicide is not uncommon while depression is rife.

Because this fatigue is at the core cellular level, the mitochondria (often termed the power houses or energy cells of the body), are literally themselves worn out. And every single process, even thinking and sleeping take energy. So if there is no energy being produced, there is little other than basic survival of the body that can be achieved.
